The data center buildout is usually told as a story about two things: power and chips. How many gigawatts a campus will draw. How many GPUs it will hold. Those are real constraints. But walk any active site and you hit a third constraint faster than either — there are not enough people to build and run it.
The demand nobody prices in
Every hyperscale campus announcement carries a number that rarely makes the headline: the workforce. A single large data center build can require thousands of construction and trades workers at peak, then hundreds of permanent operations staff for the life of the facility. Multiply that across the buildout happening simultaneously across the country and the math stops working. The people simply are not there in the numbers the schedules assume.
Where it bites first
- •Electricians and high-voltage trades. A data center is, functionally, a very large electrical system with computers attached. The demand for licensed electricians and high-voltage technicians is outpacing the pipeline that trains them.
- •Commissioning engineers. Before a facility goes live, every system is tested and proven under load. Commissioning talent is scarce, specialized, and slow to train.
- •Critical facilities technicians. Once live, the facility runs 24/7. The people who keep power and cooling online are a small, experienced, and heavily poached population.
Why it will not solve itself quickly
Trades and critical-facilities skills take years to develop, not weeks. The buildout is moving on a timeline measured in quarters. That gap — fast capital, slow labor — is the defining operational risk of the whole cycle, and it lands hardest at the local level, where a single county can see multiple campuses competing for the same finite pool of qualified workers.
What it means for hiring teams
If you build or run data centers, an open role can hold up the work. The challenge is finding people with the right experience, in the specific markets where your projects need them. That is a sourcing problem before it is anything else. NextDCX recruits for your toughest data center roles. Share the work, location, and experience your team needs. We run a fresh search for every role, approach people directly, and speak with every candidate before introducing them. You get people screened for the work, pay, location, and availability, ready to meet your hiring team. We also support recruiting partners. When the labor is the bottleneck, sourcing is the leverage.
